Hux Flux!

✨ GYLLENE TIDER – HUX FLUX 2023 ✨

/PG.

The pandemic changed us all. Those were tough and empty years. I felt a strong longing to play together with my ’70s friends again. The brotherly relationship we have and the love we receive from our audience is magical and in times like these the decision to continue the Gyllene Tider saga feels right.
So it is with great pleasure that I can announce that the history of Gyllene Tider did not end a few years ago as we all thought at the time. Hux flux, the band is back again.

See you next summer! /PG.

Puls turns 40!

Gyllene Tider’s Puls turns 40! Yes indeed it does, even though it feels like a few years ago it was released.

This was Gyllene’s Big Thing. This is where they turned “adult” without the Farfisa and with a bigger production. This time around they got to record it in EMI’s big studio, which made them move all the microphones 10 meters away and make it sound more live. And I love the sound of this album still, so good job! Puls was supposed to be recorded in Abbey Road studios, but that was canceled, can’t really remember why, but I seem to recall it was too costly. Too little time for the money, so they stayed in Skärmarbrink.

Puls gave us hits such as “Sommartider” (on demand from EMI, “not enough hits on the album!”) and “Flickan i en Cole Porter-sång”, Gyllene Tider’s only #1 in Denmark. There were other good ones on the album but as always EMI released two singles and that was it. Period. Per commented back in the day that he wrote so many songs this should have been a double LP. Well, it’s time to dig these gems up then? I don’t know if there will be a box, but I’m counting on it.

In 1990 there was a CD release with many of the missing tracks. Tracks such as “Hej!” which was supposed to be the lead single off the album, but when the album was out it was nowhere to be found. Another track was “Skäl att tvivla”, another single contender but they got sick of it during production so it was also scrapped. Many (or at least a few) of these songs were recorded in English for the promotion album that never happened. “Summer City”, “Excited”, “Girl in a Cole Porter Song”, “California Sun” and a few others. “I Go to Pieces”, a Peter & Gordon cover, was released as the B-side of “Flickan”, with the Modern Times logo attached to it. Cute if nothing else. Oh right, on Halmstads pärlor from 1995 they actually did find one of these gems (“in the attic of EMI”) and put it on this album – “Du är en gangster älskling!”

What else can I say? I loved the sleeve. Very elaborate photography by Calle Bengtsson. Aftonbladet hated it, it was the worst sleeve they’d ever seen. Oh well.

Interesting trivia:

MP’s second recorded feedback loop during a solo – “Kustvägen söderut”.

Per reuses titles from time to time – “Som regn på en akvarell” – “Watercolors in the Rain”.

Guest singer on ”Vandrar i ett sommarregn” is Eva Dahlgren, who was too shy to be on TV performing the song live so Marie Fredriksson stepped up.

“Honung och guld” has recently been picked up by Per being played acoustically.

So far it’s been released five times. Here’s to many more!

Happy B-day “Puls”!

Sommartider hej hej!

And just a couple of days later we get Sommartider (Remix ’89) on Spotify. And not one remix, but two! Lång and Kort sommar!

Gyllene Tider becomes a film

The story of Gyllene Tider becomes a motion picture.

Nordic drama production company Nevis Productions has secured a deal with Sweden’s national treasure, Gyllene Tider to make a theatrical movie and a TV-series based on the band’s incredible rise to fame and success.

In 1978, Per Gessle and Mats Persson formed Gyllene Tider with Micke Andersson, Anders Herrlin and Göran Fritzon. Having conquered Sweden, Gyllene Tider broke up in 1984. Frontman Per Gessle went on to form Roxette with singer Marie Fredriksson and took on the world.

The warm, feel-good movie – which is being developed in full collaboration with the band – will tell the inspiring story of how five teenagers captured the heart of the Swedish nation. Acclaimed Swedish scriptwriter Pernilla Oljelund (“Miss Friman’s War”, “Wallander”, “The Restaurant”) will pen Nevis’ first feature film which will start shooting in 2022. Nevis principals Anni Faurbye Fernandez, Moa Westeson and Cindy Hanson will produce.

The biopic charts the story of Per, a small-town, ambitious misfit who dreams of pop stardom and finds a brotherhood through music with MP, Micke, Anders and Göran. Defying ridicule and rejection, the band works hard and relentlessly to achieve success. The band quickly shot to fame with its power pop, catchy choruses and lyrics about life in a small, southern town. Gyllene Tider is a story about dreaming big and making it bigger, and then the highs and lows of experiencing the impossible: overnight stardom and fan hysteria, which neither the teenagers nor their families are prepared for.

In this coming-of-age story, success brings joy and fun, but also pressure, conflicts and tragic events that challenge the band and force them to grow up in the spotlight. Ultimately, it is their friendship and music that carries them through, up to the incredible last chapter, when the group not only survives but becomes bigger than ever.

In the following years, a number of Gyllene Tider reunions and tours took place. When Gyllene Tider celebrated its 25th anniversary with its first new album in 20 years, their GT25 tour in 2004 became the biggest tour in Scandinavia ever and the third largest in Europe. More records and tours followed, and by retaining their popularity for over 40 years, Gyllene Tider has earned legendary status in Sweden.

Per Gessle says: “The story of the guys in Gyllene Tider could be the story of any young small town person. The shaky possibilities after finishing school, the uncertain prospects of the future. However, inspired by the new wave and power pop scene of the era, bonding in our tiny rehearsal shack, we found a very unusual way to grow up. The early and crazy Gyllene Tider years changed our lives forever. And it seems we might have changed some other people’s lives as well along the way. The lads and I are all excited to be part of this production.”

Moa Westeson at Nevis adds: “We have long dreamed of dramatising the exceptional, inspirational story behind legendary Swedish pop band Gyllene Tider and are excited to bring the audience along on this fun, uplifting whirlwind celebration of music, friendship and coming of age that captures the zeitgeist of a bygone era.”

Moderna Tider 40

Out Nov 19, 3 LP box! Limited to 2000 copies, likely signed as that was what they were doing this summer at that “suspicious looking” lunch.

The words are Per Gessle’s and the time he talks about is 40 years ago, more precisely 1981. Gyllene Tider has broken through with thunder and lightning a year earlier and the shy boys from Halmstad do not really know how to behave in the media, what clothes they should wear or how to behave on the big stages … yet they are the biggest.

The difficult sophomore album is on the doorstep – the one that so many fall on. But not Gyllene Tider – it will be a success far beyond all expectations.

Now, 40 years later, the record is being hailed with this 3 vinyl box set containing the original vinyl, a vinyl with all the songs that were released around the album but which were not included on any album. As well as a vinyl with all the songs from the original album but in their original format, recorded live in the rehearsal studio in Harplinge.
