Stories Behind the New Songs, 1994 - 1996

PG, 1983

November 1994 - "Solens vän" ("Friend Of the Sun")

Gyllene re-united for the first time in ten years to record this special track for the "Vilda Fåglar - Sånger Om Barn" ("Wild Birds - Songs About Children") 2 CD compilation. The Pers Garage recordings in 1989 (for "Instant Hits!") could not be considered a "full" reunion, because Anders was not part of the project. The project was started by Kjelle Andersson at EMI Svenska AB, and it was an idea he had actually thought of several years earlier. When he asked Sweden's most famous musicians to be a part of the "children's charity" CD, the response was overwhelming. It took nine months to complete the album, and other artists contributing new songs were Marie Fredriksson and Wilmer X, among MANY others. At first, "Solens vän" could only be found on the "Vilda Fåglar" set (which many didn't like), but it was then later released as the B-side to GT's "Det är över nu" CD single. This is a great track, often referred to as a mix between GT and Nirvana! The song was originally named "Plantera ett frö" (Plant a Seed).

May 1995 - "Det är över nu" ("It's Over Now")

"Det är över nu" was the first single from the "Halmstads Pärlor" compilation (which was released as a 2 track CD with the B-side "Solens vän"), and it earned excellent reviews in the Swedish press. There was no video shot for the song (as it was talked about), which dominated the Swedish airplay/sales charts during MOST of that time. "I wrote this song during a Roxette soundcheck in Tokyo in February '95. Then we recorded the song more or less live in March at the EMI studios. I did the first guitar solo, and Mats played the second. I think it sounds a lot like Gyllene Tider." It was HUGE during Återtåget '96, and has proven to be one of Sweden's most loved summer hits.

"Du är en gangster, älskling!" ("You're a Gangster, Honey!")

The song, which was originally recorded for the 1982 release, "Puls", had recently been remembered and was finally (!) brought out of the dusty EMI archives. It HAD to be a part of the compilation, all five members agreed.

"Det är blommor som har fångat dig" ("It's Flowers That Have Captured You")

Per wrote this song in Stockholm sometime in 1994. Some of the lyrics came from his Åsa, and the title was also an idea of hers. "I had problems getting back to writing in Swedish again, because I haven't done anything serious since 1986. Where the music's concerned, it's very Neil Young." It was the last new song to be completed, in March at the EMI Studios in Stockholm, and there was a lot of pressure on Per and Anders to finish everything up; they were to go to South America (to tour with Roxette). Thankfully, "Blommor" was finished in the nick of time!

"Kung av sand" ("King Of Sand")

"Kung av sand" was the second single from the album, available in late August. Gyllene Tider was hoping to have a video shot for the track, but it never worked out (for unknown reasons!) . Per wrote this ballad at the beginning of 1995 while in his Sydney hotel room. "This is the one I find most commercial of the three new songs. Otherwise, it's a nice lyric. The song combines the current taste in music of each in the band perfectly. If we were to record a new album, it would most probably sound a bit like Tom Petty's work." On May 14th, 1995, the guys in Gyllene Tider posed in cool and soggy weather for a photo session at Tylösand. One of the shots was used for the single cover of "Kung av sand". Several other pictures from that photo shoot made their way into local newspapers, in a time which was considered Gyllene's "Big Comeback"!

June 1996 - “Gå & fiska!” (“Go Fish!”)

About not wanting to deal with all of life’s seriousness, and wanting instead to do something relaxing, such as going fishing. There's not much more to it than that, we're afraid...

Juni, juli, augusti” (“June, July, August”)

About our longing for the summer time. Everything is so dark and uninspiring during the winter months, so we all look forward to June, July and August, and the “easiness” that goes along with the warm weather, etc.

Harplinge

Per has written this track for MP, Anders and Micke, who were all raised in the small village just north west of Halmstad. The only connection Per and Göran have to Harplinge is that Gyllene used to rehearse there once upon a time. The song was written on a beach in Malaysia when Per and Åsa vacationed there in February ‘96, and is quite simply a description of the 15 minute drive from Halmstad to Harplinge, and the sights and memories along the way. Micke was actually going to sing lead (ending his 15 year “singing ban” the others had been strongly enforcing!), but he ended up being very sick during the recordings and couldn’t manage it. However, he did get to say "hello" a few times!

Faller ner på knä” (“Falling To My Knees”)

The most serious song on the EP, “Faller” is about self-searching and “finding” oneself. It was originally a ballad, but as the story goes, Per suddenly came up with a killer guitar riff on the way to the studio. They tested it upon his arrival, and thought it was SO perfect, they changed the song from a ballad to mid-tempo.

September 1996 - "Ingen går i ringen" ("No One Walks In the Circle")

This is actually an old Gyllene song which was remixed and polished up to appear especially on the B-side of "Juni, juli, augusti". Most interesting is that the lyrics were written during the song's recording! Hallandsposten asked Per on the day of the last Återtåg show what the name of the song would be, and he admitted he had no clue - he hadn't thought of one yet! The gang gathered at Studio T&A on August 12th to begin work on "Ingen går", and were finished two days later, just in time for MP to take off to sunny Mallorica, where Back On Stage were performing for three weeks. And the song? It ROCKS!
